What's a typical singing lesson like?

vocal technique instruction

I conduct lessons from my cozy home studio located in Whataupoko, Gisborne.

My studio is filled with everything I love - instruments, photo's, a shimmering lava lamp, lots of light, my cat, lots of bright colours - including my signature flower rug and of course, my wonderful students!

When you arrive, we chat a few minutes (I listen to your voice while we do this) and catch up - share a hug (if you're a hugger) and generally relax into things. I've also been known to feed people or serve tired voices Rooibos tea, lemon & honey...

I have a monitor speaker and microphone setup in one corner for live singing and a mini recording studio for recording your voice.

It's a good idea to record your vocals soon after starting lessons and in monthly increments thereafter so you can hear your improvements - you'll be amazed how different your voice sounds after a few months of practice!

A typical singing lesson usually lasts 60 minutes and that affords us enough time to explore your voice and work on vocal development and improvement.

That entails doing some vocal work in the studio, which usually includes a variety of vocal exercises that help us find tonal balance, posture alignment, build muscle memory, strength, flexibility, breath support, resonance, placement, and a lot more.

Yes, there will be some weird sounds and funny noises made...

In our lessons, I'll guide you to understand your voice better and explore its various elements, ensuring you always know how your instrument functions. This way, you'll be able to "autocorrect" if something isn't working as it should.

Learn to sing in tune

I'll help you unlock all the areas of your voice, enabling you to use it with freedom and ease. You'll gradually build up your voice so that your entire range is powerful and resonant!

Anyone can learn to sing

Some sessions can be intense and provide a complete athletic workout, but they're a lot of fun!

Usually 60 minutes would allow us time to work on songs too. Many of my students enjoy writing and singing their own songs, so this is a great space to get some help with your vocal delivery and performances. I also help with songwriting, lyrics, melodies etc.

There's usually heaps of laughter and a lot of "aha" moments along the way that highlight those important vocal breakthroughs we often achieve during lessons.

This is how it is with each voice - they bloom into beautiful flowers when nurtured.

For me, that's hugely rewarding.

"Singing is an amazing journey of finding your own UNIQUE voice."
